Privileges of an AFI(H) - PPL(H)
Along with the ‘normal’ restrictions governing flying instruction there are two additional restrictions placed upon an AFI(H) and these are as follows:-
| ANO Schedule 8 - Part B Ratings
|
1. A ‘Qualified’ flying instructor must be present during the take off and landing, in order to supervise the AFI, at the aerodrome where the instruction is to begin and end.
2. An AFI may not send a person on
Their first solo flight by day or night
Their first cross-country flight by day or night
When performing solo flight (acting as pilot in command) for grant or renewal of a pilot’s licence or the inclusion or variation of any rating no other person may be carried in the aircraft.
A cross-country flight is a flight of more than 3 nautical miles from the aerodrome of departure.
| CAP 53 - Part 3 chapter 5 paragraph 3.5 |
As an AFI(H) instruction may only be given in the aircraft types endorsed in the AFI(H) rating. To instruct in an additional aircraft type a further flight test must be undertaken for that type with either a FIC(H) instructor or an FIE(H).
Flying instruction limitations - General - PPL(H)
Flying instruction given for the purpose of obtaining a pilots licence or an additional rating may only be given from (aircraft may only land at and take off from) a licensed aerodrome, a government aerodrome, an aerodrome owned or managed by the CAA or an area so notified for the take off and landing of aircraft.
| ANO Schedule 8 - Part A The Licence |
Payment for flying instruction may only be received when the aircraft is operated through a flying club and both the instructor and the student must be members of that club, ie charges can not be made for training an owner in their own aircraft (unless operated in accordance with above).
| CAP 53 - Part 3 chapter 5 paragraph 4.3 |
A minimum of 5 hours PIC is required on each aircraft type before instruction may be given on that type.
| CAP 53 - Part 3 chapter 5 paragraph 3.5.3 |
Before instruction is given in turbine-engine, multi-engine, multi-rotor or helicopters exceeding 2300kg a minimum of 30 hours PIC is required on that helicopter type.
A ‘basic’ instructor rating, AFI(H)/QFI(H), does not permit instruction for either night or instrument ratings.
