ANO Schedule 8 - Part B Ratings
1. An AFI may not send a person on
Their first solo flight by day or night
Their first cross-country flight by day or night

Although an AFI is not permitted to send a student on their first solo. This restriction does not, however, apply to sending students on any subsequent solos. The sending of any student solo is a large responsiblity for the instructor and consideration should be given to the following points :-

Standards for Solo
Relaxed hovering & Spot turns both left and right
1st take off to hover should be well controlled ie good ability to 'feel' for position of cyclic - no hint of potential dynamic roll over
Landings from hove good and firm ie safe - no hing of backwards or sideways drift
Perfect RPM control ie always moves throttle in the correct direction - if a governor is fitted it is to be used
Safe transitions and good accurate circuit control ie correct pattern, height and speed
Good ability ot judge correct approach angle
Good autorotations to flare power recovery from each circuit leg
Before going solo the student requires a current class 3 medical certificate
Do not send a student solo unless the weather conditions are suitable - for early solos a steady wind no more than 10 knots and good clear VFR conditions
If there is any doubt do not send your student solo

Discussion Points
  Emergencies and go around
  Weight & C of G differences
  Manifold presssure
  Cyclic stick position
Rate of Climb - goes like a rocket
