  Exercise 1 & 2 Page 5
Exercises 1 and 2 of CAP 421 cover a series of topics in relation to the helicopters systems, checks, emergencies, general handling and airmanship. Realistically these topics are not undertaken as individual exercises but are generally integrated and covered in conjunction with the earlier flying exercises (starting from exercise 4).

Exercise 1 - Familiarisation with the aircraft
Aim:- To familiarise the student with the aircraft’s controls and systems and to teach the drills and check lists used for normal flying and emergencies.

Before going solo the student should be completely familiar with:-
Main rotor and tail rotor systems
  Fuel and oil systems
  Electrical system and radio equipment
  Hydraulic system (if applicable)
  Emergency procedures
  Aircraft documentation and technical log

Exercise 2 -Preparation for flight and action after flight
Aim:- To teach thorough preparation for flight and action after flight

From an early stage the student should carry out the external and internal pre and post flight checks as described in the flight manual check list. Particular reference should be made to the fact that whilst the rotors are in turning the aircraft is ‘alive’ and all controls especially collective and cyclic should be guarded until shutdown is complete and the rotors have stopped.

Particular points of airmanship such as position of aircraft, wind direction, airfield procedures (AGA section of CAP 32 - AIP) and emergency facilities, downwash awareness, potential blade sailing, movement of other traffic etc should be discussed as appropriate.

The aircraft documentation and Technical Log completion should be covered and the Flying Order Book, where applicable, should be read and signed by the student.
