Exercise 20 - Transitions from the hover to the hover Page 23

Aim:- To teach rapid forward movement from the hover to the hover at constant height & RPM

Airmanship:-
  • Good Keep a good lookout!!
  • Wind Direction & Velocity
  • RPM, T’s & P’s
  • 10ft AGL

The Transition
Keep a good lookout!! - Commence standard transition (Ex. 10)
Aim for 10 ft AGL and about 30 Kts
On onset of ETL lower collective to prevent climb - right pedal
Adjust RPM if necessary to prevent overspeed
Accelerate smoothly to the desired speed - control height with lever
Set and control desired attitude with cyclic - lower collective to prevent climb
Use pedals to maintain balanced flight or maintain the heading the same as track - (Wind direction & velocity)
To slow down gently flair the aircraft (de-accelerative attitude) at the same time lowering the lever to control height and prevent any ballooning - ready with right pedal
As ETL is lost be ready with collective & left pedal
Nose will tend to pitch up with increase in power cyclic may need to be eased forward to prevent aircraft stopping too quickly
@ Zero ground speed set for the hover attitude (5ft hover) and adjust throttle if necessary to prevent low RPM and possible over-pitching

Discussion Points
  Various wind conditions
Danger of over pitching on recovery to hover
  Over pitching recovery
  Downwind transitions
