| Aim:- |
To teach how to come rapidly to the hover, into wind, from cruising speed at low altitude |
Airmanship:-
- Good

- Wind Direction & Velocity
- RPM (97% - 104%), T’s & P’s
- At least 25 ft AGL
Quick Stops into Wind
| |
 |
- Commence standard transition (Ex. 10) (Aim for 25ft AGL, 50 Kts straight & level) |
| |
 |
Adjust RPM if necessary to prevent any overspeed |
| |
 |
Accelerate to 50 Kts allow aircraft to climb to 25 ft AGL
|
| |
 |
Lower collective to maintain height - right pedal |
| |
 |
Maintain 50 Kts attitude with cyclic |
| |
 |
Use pedals to maintain balanced flight or maintain the heading the same as track - (Wind Direction & Velocity) |
On command “Quick Stop - Go”
| |
 |
To slow down start a gradual flair (de-accelerative attitude) at the same time lowering the lever to control height and prevent any ballooning - ready with right pedal |
| |
 |
Tighten flare as airspeed decays to achieve zero ground speed |
| |
 |
Maintain height at 25ft with collective (co-ordinated with attitude) |
| |
 |
As ETL is lost be ready with collective & left pedal - maintain 25ft height (do not let aircraft sink) |
| |
 |
@ Zero ground speed select the hover attitude and adjust RPM if necessary to prevent low RPM (possible over-pitching) - remember throttle is needed with the higher power settings required in OGE hover |
| |
 |
Move slowly forward & down to normal 5 ft hover height |
Vortex Ring
If the aircraft is allowed to sink at the latter stages of the quick stop then there is a danger of vortex ring developing i.e. airspeed less than 15Kts, rate of decent (sink) and power applied.
When descending from ‘high’ hover remember to move forward if possible and maintain ROD below 200ft per minute.
Downwind Quick Stops
Transition as above but aim for 35ft AGL as blades will be closer to the ground........
Two methods for stopping:-
1. Turn & Flare
| |
 |
From downwind position roll into a turn of about 25º to 30°, start to flare during turn but maintain at least 20kts airspeed until within 30º of the wind |
| |
 |
Check & adjust RPM if necessary - avoid any overspeed |
| |
 |
Continue with flare maintaining height and aim to come to the hover (as above) facing into wind |
| |
 |
Move slowly forward & down to normal 5ft hover height |
2. Flare & Turn
| |
 |
Start flare whilst downwind |
| |
 |
Check & adjust RPM if necessary - avoid any overspeed |
| |
 |
As airspeed reduces roll into a turn of about 25º to 30º |
| |
 |
Maintain at least 20kts airspeed whilst in the turn until within 30º of the wind |
| |
 |
Maintain height & flare (as above) aiming to come to the hover facing into wind |
| |
 |
Move slowly forward & down to normal 5ft hover height |
Flare & turn - gentle flare to reduce airspeed before rolling into turn
Beware of slowing down so much that you lose forward air speed during turn - (if wind 25 Kts - start turn at about 35 - 40 Kts).
